Quick Response Codes

What is QR Code?

QR (Quick Response) Code is a 2D (matrix type) code readable by OR scanners, camera phones and smartphones. It was created in 1994 by the Denso-Wave Incorporated of Japan. They were seeking to create a code that could be easily read by scanners so that it would help them with inventory.  QR code carries information both horizontally and vertically as opposed to the traditional one-direction bar code. “By carrying information in both directions, QR code can carry up to several hundred times the amount of data carried by ordinary bar codes.”1 The code is a square of black shapes on a white background. Within that figure URLS, text or other data can be embedded.  QR code is open format and it is free to create or use the tags. It is extremely popular in Japan in a wide variety of uses. But it is only just starting to gain traction in the United States and Europe.

Here is an example that I created with the Kawya QR Code Generator
